The Ecumenical Migration Centre at the Brotherhood of St Laurence will receive the funding to work in partnership with local migrant services and councils to address the priorities identified by community groups. The funding will support six projects in the inner city, including:
• A partnership between the Somali Community of Victoria and the Eritrean Community in Australia to develop a youth network for the large number of young volunteers living in Moonee Valley and Melbourne; • Support to the Imam Ali Islamic Centre to develop innovative programs for their youth network, which has begun meeting in Moreland and involves refugee young people from Iraq; • Support to the Victorian Eritrean Community Association to develop a network to reduce isolation experienced by older refugees living in Moonee Valley and Melbourne; • Assistance to an Afghan and Iranian Women’s Group to enhance group activities for isolated women living in Yarra; • Planning support to the Ethiopian Women’s Group in Victoria to assist fundraising activities for refugee women living in Moonee Valley and Melbourne; and • Strategic advice to the Angola Congo Community Association to improve its activities to support the needs of the growing number of Congolese arrivals.
