Wednesday, March 14. 2007On the Brunswick Baths Last night Carlo Carli MP made a short speech to Parliament regarding the Brunswick Baths. In the speech Carlo indicated his support for any funding application Council might make for the State Government to contribute a proportionate amount for any upgrade of the Brunswick Baths. The full text of the speech is below the fold. Mr CARLI (Brunswick) — The Brunswick city baths comprise very old swimming pool facilities in my electorate. It is also a very major community resource; it is probably the most important resource in the Brunswick area, with hundreds of thousands of people using the facilities there every year. As an old facility, it is coming towards the end of its use by date; basically it needs a major rebuild. Recently I was at the Sydney Road street party where the Brunswick branch of the ALP organised a petition calling on the council to have a major reinvestment into the Brunswick swimming pool. Over a thousand people signed that petition. Tomorrow night the Moreland City Council is meeting to discuss the swimming pool. There is a proposal to look at both the works that need to be done on the six local swimming pools and in particular the work that needs to be done on the Brunswick baths. It is time we had some real action on the Brunswick baths. We need a big reinvestment. As such I wish to support any application the council makes to the state government to assist in the capital upgrade of this very important local institution. Tomorrow night we need the council to push ahead to agree to a major reinvestment and a capital upgrade and to seek some funds from the state government to make it possible for the Brunswick baths to continue to be the major resource and community centre that it is.
